In THE DESERT WAITS, I love the blend of desert and Hollywood. Not the glitzy Hollywood, but the real thing on a movie set. The suspects are as diverse as beer and champagne and just as flavorful. All the characters are rich in development and fascinating studies in human nature. Throw in some exotic and skin-crawling critters and the cast is complete. The mystery is spot on. When Alex is summoned to a remote area of the Arizona desert by her actress friend, Caroline, she knows something is terribly wrong. They haven't been in contact for many years. The day after Alex arrives, Caroline is killed on the set of her latest movie. Accident or murder? Someone had been stalking Caroline. First with love notes and then threats. Now she's dead and Alex becomes deeply involved in revealing the truth.
No one writes crisp, sharp desert atmosphere like J C Black. In this book the desert comes alive. Intriguing. Fast paced. The climax will have you fidgeting in your seat with your heart in your throat.

The Desert Waits edition by J Carson Black Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
J. Carson Black CAN WRITE. In another review of her books, I said I'll read them all if I live long enough. I'm sold.
It was an entertaining book. It was so predictable, almost from the very beginning you knew who the bad person was and the girl was rather dumb. She really needed someone to save her.
Books base storyline was ok but the subplots got to be a little to much and a couple of them didn't contribute anything to the story. Twisting, turning road.
I had read J. Carson Black trio of books involving detective Laura Cardinal and were very impressed by them, so I had high hopes for this book. I came away disappointed, and if this had been the first book I read by this author, it probably would have been the last.
I found the story line very disjointed, the character development poor, the romantic aspect very week, and I thought the whole concept was way too far fetched.
I see that this book got mainly good reviews, so maybe the problem is with me, but I may give J. Carson Black another go based on his Laura Cardinal series, and hope to have better luck than I had with this one.
A mystery which keeps you guessing at every turn. The detail regarding the desert, sunsets, weather and hiking are phenomenal. I am never disappointed by J. Carson Black. I want to read more stories by this author.
I can see merit in some of the critical reviews. There are rather faulty aspects of the book with regard to character development, logic, and plot. Nevertheless, I found this to be a rather enjoyable light mystery which could have been considerably better. A Hollywood star calls upon an old school chum she has not seen for more than fifteen years. She is having a major problem with a stalker and fears for her life. The friend, our heroine, responds to the call and not only finds that there are, indeed, problems, but that some significant ones tend to be hers not the friends. Naturally, our heroine falls in love and stumbles into danger, The author has some difficulty making the plot jell and reconciling the behavioral characteristics of the heroine with each other (is it really possible that an experienced and skillful nature photographer would fall asleep on the job). If you are the kind of reader who is serious about faults in the outcome of an authors efforts, you are likely to be too distressed to enjoy reading the book; if you are tolerant of particular faults and judge by the overall appeal, you might well find this a good, relatively inexpensive, read.
Really enjoyed the drama of this book. Trying to figure out "who done it" was as much fun as reading it. The secret lives of the characters were unexpected at times which created the exciting storyline. Always enjoy J Carson Black' s books.
