Because I so loved the author’s debut novel, Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, I picked up Looking For Me (Penguin, 2013) by Beth Hoffman on my Kindle.

Looking For Me was a different story and writing style. The narrator, Teddie Overman, is an adult woman (as opposed to the adolescent CeeCee), and the first half of the story fluctuates between her current life as a single antique furniture dealer in Charleston and her childhood memories of growing up on a farm in Kentucky. In particular, Teddie is trying to piece together what happened to her brother, Josh, who mysteriously disappeared many years ago.

While the writing is cozy, safe and sweet, the stories – both past and present – meander along for hundreds of pages without any sense of urgency, direction, or plot. At about halfway in, when nothing more seemed to be happening outside Teddie’s furniture business, I skipped ahead to see if she’d make any progress, solve the mystery of her missing brother, or experience any interesting revelations otherwise. Nothing more unfolds or is determined, other than an eventual love interest, who is fairly unrelated to the rest of the story and isn’t prevalent enough to deem the novel a romance.

Because the story in general lacked plot and direction, and a resolution was missing from the ending, I was not invested enough to go back and read the remaining 50%. The writing, however, is very good. This title may appeal to readers of southern lit and fans of Fannie Flagg, or anyone seeking a story featuring a mature narrator with slow, easy pacing and real-life settings.

A brilliant and beautifully moving story. Teddi Overman is a girl who knows what she wants, and what she wants is to restore and refinish the old furniture she rescues from yard sales, and eventually to own her own antiques and restoration shop. Against her mother's well meaning advice, Teddi leaves her home in Kentucky at 18, and heads for Charleston South Carolina.

Teddi's family is broken in ways Teddi doesn't understand. Teddi's mother is perennially unhappy and disapproving of everything Teddi does or dreams of, but Teddi loves her mother and strives to win her love and approval.

A major element of the story is the disappearance of her younger brother, Josh, when he was still a teenager. Teddi cannot bring herself to believe that her beloved brother is dead, and so is constantly searching for proof that he is still alive.

Ultimately, what Teddi is trying to do is "find" and "restore" the family she longs for. In the mean time, Teddi forms a sort of "surrogate" family for herself in the loving and supportive friends she meets on her journey.

I enjoyed this book on several levels. The characters were believable and likable, but not too perfect. The "mystery" of Josh's disappearance is deftly handled and keeps the reader guessing right up to the end. There is also a little romance thrown in for good measure. The furniture restoration is described in just enough detail to be interesting, but not boring. In fact, it's one of those books that makes furniture restoration look really fun and exciting, like, hey! I could do that!

Beth Hoffman is a very talented writer and I will be keeping a close watch for more of her wonderful stories in the future.
This is the second book I've read by this author. The first was Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. I enjoyed this book far more than that one and I'm glad I gave this author another chance. This book has more depth, the characters are better developed and everything is not nicely wrapped up and tied with a bow at the end.

The story begins with the main character visiting her mother at her childhood home and it moves forward from there with periodic flashbacks. The flashback stories are done very well and were not at all distracting from the story. They occur at appropriate times in the story and add to the readers overall understanding of the main character.

The relationships between the main character and the other members of her family are both heartbreaking and heartwarming. This is especially true of the relationship between mother and daughter. I liked the fact that the author stayed true to the characters and didn't try to wrap everything up all neat and tidy at the end and yet the ending is still satisfying.
