"All people are good till they ain't no more."

This genre-bending post-apocalyptic book is part horror story, part cat-and-mouse thriller, part modern western, and part survival tale.

Seventeen-year-old Elka can hardly remember her life before she met Trapper. For a decade now, this gruff man has been like a father to her. The two of them have lived on their own in the middle of nowhere—on the fringes of a decimated society. Trapper has taught her how to live like an animal, hunting for food and surviving in the stark wilderness.

Then one day, Elka sees Trapper's face on a wanted posted in a nearby town and learns that he's a deranged killer. She flees north in search of her real parents, but it won't be an easy journey. Along the way, Elka encounters dangerous people struggling to get by in this new world—and not only that, but she has the sneaking suspicion that she's being stalked by Trapper. Worst of all is the nagging feeling, as she confronts her own dark past, that maybe she's just as inhuman as he is. Maybe he taught her too well.

The Wolf Road is a haunting story about a feral young girl reckoning with her inner darkness and coming to terms with her own humanity. It's sort of like if Stephen King wrote The Road. While I questioned some of the author's narrative choices, I was thoroughly captivated by Elka and enjoyed taking this journey with her.

The Wolf Road A Novel eBook Beth Lewis Reviews

Firstly, this was a difficult book to read, as the author chose to write it totally in a slang of the uneducated. To the end my brain would not allow me so absorb one slang term for the actual 2 letter word it means. However, it really is quite the story of a redemption of sorts for 2 young girls whose struggles brought them to become the best of friends. Living was very tough for these two who really are well suited to become friends and help each other enormously in the story. The thing I learned is that I'm very glad I've had a home and "people" my whole life. I really really admire the author for her writing, and not stepping out of the slang once that I noticed. And I admire the terrific story of Elka's growth even though some of the reading was sometimes unpleasant. It is a terrific story I can recommend.
I needed a break from non-fiction books and The Wolf Road provided just that. The story was very interesting and characters deep and fun. There were some twists, like it seems the story takes place in the 1800s yet there is talk of Russian "bombing" and Elka, the main character, even found what she thought was an airplane wing while walking through the dense woods. It was fun. I recommend it but, Elka was captured by a "deep woods man" when she was 7 years old and by the time she was 18, knew way more than her experience living in the deep woods with a bad person, should know.. And, the ending is delicious.
I wish I hadn't waited so long to read this. The book was fantastic. Great story, excellently fleshed-out characters, in a harsh and unforgiving world. I wouldn't hesitate to read anything from Beth Lewis. This is going on the shelf next to Joe Abercrombie's Red Country for its grittiness and characterization.

I'm glad I bought this in hardcover, as it's a book I'll read many times again over the years.
This book was such an unexpected surprise. I wasn't sure where it was going in the beginning and I certainly didn't expect the trajectory this novel traveled. I loved Elka and her relationships with the wolf, Penelope and Kreagar never took the obvious paths. This novel is full of twists and turns. It has a very high gore and ick factor. It takes a look at the worse in people and questions if redemption is possible or even necessary, in some cases. I had feelings for these characters; For Kreagar I felt anger, vengefulness and distaste, for Penelope I felt sadness, compassion and empathy and for Elka I felt compassion, love, forgiveness and a deep sadness at all she went through. She was a child and a victim of unspeakable horror. I was very sad when this novel came to an end. I will miss Elka and Penelope.
It's hard to say I "enjoyed" this book because it's among the darkest novels I've ever read and certainly the darkest since The Road. The storyline is disturbing and the author spares no social norms or morality in telling the tale. That said, I loved the writing style and I enjoyed the characters. The description of post-apocalyptic Canada (I assume) was fantastic, though some obvious license was taken on the effects of nuclear waste on the survivors.

I also think - and I have this gripe with a lot of books - that some characters are too one dimensional and cartoonish at times. The magistrate is a crack shot with a shiny silver pistol, the shyster claim seller is a weasel with a weasely voice and no redeeming value, the human trafficker is a slick talking charmer with a velvet voice and looks to match... You get the point.

Bottom line is this is a great story with some twists, but it's not for those who don't like a little gore with their leisure reading.
This book took me completely by surprise. I felt for Elka as. she learned about the man that had raised her for ten years. I found myself yelling at her every time she got herself in trouble, and cheering her on as she escapes danger. I was also moved to tears as Elka's memories resurface and she realizes her part in the murders. This was a fantastic thriller with lots of of twists and turns. This is definitely one of my favorite reads this year.
