Third in the Notorious Flynn series this book follows the story of Crispin Flynn younger brother to the Duke of Hartholm (The Other Duke-Book). I do not consider this a stand alone book and here's why. The first couple of chapters take up where Crispin is forced to marry, while in a drunken stupor and wakes up to his beautiful new bride. They have an easy if somewhat difficult conversation and head to the Dukes to try and get things resolved and not soon after decide to stay married and work things out. Now if you haven't read the first two books you might do a bit of head scratching when you start reading this.

But the first two really help set up this last book in the series, which I thoroughly enjoyed. A) I like a good series and B) I like when the author really takes the time to help set up the back stories to her supporting characters. You don't learn the tragedy that befalls Crispin right off the back, it builds slowly, taking its time with one of the main focuses being on Crispins relationship to Gemma and how they learn not only to like one another but trust one another as well.

My only criticism is when from the moment you find out about his troubled past to the moment everything is resolved it felt like it was rushed a bit. I'm not only that normally likes a lot of confrontation in her books but I felt like there could have been a bit more.

As I said I like Crispin, he was complex, had angst, desired his wife and didn't treat her like rubbish (well maybe a few times but it wasn't constant to the point where you would get annoyed) and had a strong desire to right his wrongs even if he had no idea how to do it.

Gemma was a great heroine!! She's a a young widow that although she has had hardships from her husband and father she doesn't take it out on Crispin in fact she doesn't try to rationalize that Crispin is a "man like her father" as some authors are wont to do in these types of situations. She has a modern flare about her that doesn't seem out of place in the time period and she fights for her man without being annoying.

They really were a great pair!!

Regarding the sex and love scenes, they are written with typical Ms. Michael's flair! My favorite part was when Crispin told Gemma that he welcomed sex between them and she lunged for him. No simpering female here! It made me laugh and it felt real to the moment and there characters. I really get tired sometimes of reading about how scared and afraid some women are in novels like these. This heroine takes control of her desires which is refreshing change or pace.

Read the other two books in the series and enjoy this one!!!

As I never had a doubt, Jess Michaels has done it again! I can always rely on this author whenever I need a book that captures my attention and doesn’t allow me to put it down until the last page. The Widow Wager is book 3 of the Notorious Flynns series, with The Other Duke and The Scoundrel’s Lover as book 1 and 1.

The Widow Wager is Crispin Flynn’s story. Having lost the woman he loved and watching his brother being forced into a life he didn’t want, Crispin began gambling and drinking regularly. But what happens is exactly what he wanted to avoid. After winning a bet he placed with a widow’s father, he is now obligated to wed, that very night, the widow of the Earl of Laurelcross, Gemma. The thing is until the following morning he didn’t even remember what he was betting on and is totally surprised to find he now has a wife of who he has never, before the wedding, met.

Gemma doesn’t want marriage either, as her first husband passed away during the act of having sex. Now she can’t escape having to marry one of the biggest rakes in London, after her father, she feels, just as well as sold her to a womanizing rake of which gossip never ceases.

Gemma and Crispin must challenge everything they thought they wanted, based on the previous past hurts and disappointments. Their predicament brings them passion but neither knows if it will actually turn into love. One thing on the upside is that Gemma can’t compare Crispin to her father, and finds him very different, which is a good thing.
But how can Crispin come to care for her when he doesn’t even like himself? And Gemma must find a way to stand up for herself and be part of someone, not simply someone to boss around.

I honestly love this author and very highly recommend Jess Michaels to anyone who loves to read romance. Jess has a permanent home on my keeper read and reread shelf!
